Plot Summary

The movie begins with a flashback of Sam Alex (Prithviraj), a brilliant police officer who is happily married to Teena (Meghana Raj) and has a daughter named Kathreena. One night, while returning from a party, they are attacked by a gang of drug dealers who kill Teena and Kathreena in front of Sam. Sam shoots the killers but is unable to save his family. He falls into depression and alcoholism and quits his job.

Three years later, Sam is living alone in a houseboat and is visited by his friend and former colleague Sudhakaran (S. P. Sreekumar), who informs him that there have been four murders in the city that have a similar pattern: the victims are all men who have committed crimes in the past but escaped justice due to lack of evidence or influence. The killer leaves a chess piece near each body as a signature. Sudhakaran requests Sam to help him solve the case, but Sam refuses.

Meanwhile, Sanjana (Miya George), an ambitious journalist who works for a TV channel, gets interested in the case and tries to get an interview with Sam. She manages to track him down to his houseboat and persuades him to talk to her. She also shows him some photos of the crime scenes that she has obtained from her sources. Sam notices that the chess pieces left by the killer are arranged in a specific order that corresponds to the moves of a famous chess game played by Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in 1972.

Sam agrees to help Sudhakaran with the investigation and joins him at the police station. He deduces that the killer is following the chess game and predicts that there will be two more murders before he reaches checkmate. He also suspects that the killer has a personal motive behind his actions and that he is somehow connected to Sam's past.

Sam and Sudhakaran follow the clues left by the killer and find out that he is targeting people who were involved in a case that Sam had handled before his family's murder. The case was about a young girl named Anjali who was raped and killed by four men: Rafeeq, Shaji, Maniyan, and Varkey. Sam had arrested them but they were released due to lack of evidence and political pressure.

Sam realizes that the killer is none other than Anjali's brother Antony (Rahul Madhav), who had witnessed his sister's murder and vowed to take revenge on her killers and those who helped them escape justice. Antony had learned chess from Anjali and had used it as a way to cope with his trauma. He had also studied the profiles of his targets and planned his murders accordingly.

Sam confronts Antony at his hideout and tries to convince him to surrender peacefully. However, Antony refuses to listen and shoots Sam in the chest. Sam manages to shoot back and wounds Antony. He then calls Sudhakaran and Sanjana and tells them to come to the location. He also tells them that he has solved the case and that he is proud of them.

The movie ends with Sam lying on the floor, bleeding profusely, and looking at a photo of his family. He smiles and closes his eyes, implying that he has died.
